The Wonderlic test: 50 questions, 12 minutes, and what to do about it
Your employer sent a Wonderlic link and you have a couple of days. Here is exactly what is on it, what the publisher tells candidates to do, and how to use the time you have.
Updated October 13, 2026 · by TimedPrep
- Timed part: 50 questions, exactly 12 minutes (14.4 seconds per question)
- Whole assessment: about 35 minutes: the timed part, 58 motivation items and 150 personality statements
- Aids: no calculator, no dictionary
- Publisher's rule: "Guessing is not likely to improve your score." "Do not skip around."
- Result: the employer sees a job-specific result at once; you get no numeric score
- Short version: 30 questions in 8 minutes
What the Wonderlic is in 2026
If the invitation says "Wonderlic", you are almost certainly taking Wonderlic Select (called WonScore until a few years ago). Wonderlic describes it in its candidate FAQ as three sections: one timed and two untimed. Most people finish everything in about 35 minutes.
Only the timed section has right and wrong answers. That is the 50-question, 12-minute cognitive test this guide is about. The other two sections ask about your interests and your personality; we cover them in the personality section guide.
You may also meet older names for the same kind of test:
- WPT-R (Wonderlic Personnel Test, Revised): the classic 50 questions in 12 minutes.
- WPT-Q or "QuickTest": a short form. Wonderlic's own description gives it 8 minutes; prep vendors report 30 questions. Some employers use it as a first screen at home and follow it with a supervised 50-question test.
- SLE (Scholastic Level Exam): the version schools use for admissions. Wonderlic's SLE page mentions a form with 30 questions in eight minutes as well.
Not sure which one you got? See how to tell from the invitation email.
Format and rules
These rules come from the instructions Wonderlic prints at the top of its Wonderlic Select sample assessment:
| Rule | What Wonderlic says |
|---|---|
| Questions and time | 50 questions, "exactly 12 minutes" |
| Calculator | Not allowed. No dictionary or other resources either |
| Finishing | "Many people do not finish all of the questions" |
| Guessing | "Guessing is not likely to improve your score." If you think you know the answer but are not sure, mark your best choice and move on |
| Order | "Do not skip around or spend too much time on any one question" |
| Supervision | Usually taken at home with nobody watching; some employers supervise it |
| Link | Generally active for up to 14 days |
Two of these lines are different from the advice you will read for other hiring tests. On the CCAT and the PI Cognitive Assessment the publishers tell you to guess freely. Wonderlic does not. Take the test in order, answer what you can work out, and do not spray random answers in the last seconds. We compare the three publishers' rules in guess or skip.
Most questions have five answer choices. On the publisher's older sample sheet, logic questions have three (true, false, uncertain) and so do word-pair questions.

Start the free 12-minute testQuestion types and how to solve them fast
Wonderlic says the test measures "logic and reasoning rather than knowledge" and that only a small number of questions involve calculations. The types are mixed together, not grouped into sections, and published research on older forms shows the questions getting harder as you go. So the first 15 are where your easy points are: do not rush them into careless errors.
The samples below are practice questions written by us in the format of the Wonderlic. Click an answer to see the explanation.
Word problems
The biggest group in every breakdown we have seen: prices, pay, rates, percentages, averages. Nothing above middle-school arithmetic, but you do it in your head or on scratch paper. Round first, look at how far apart the answer choices are, and only calculate exactly when two choices are close.

Number series
Find the rule and give the next number. Check the differences between neighbors first; that solves most of them. If the numbers jump up and down, read every other number: it is two series woven together.

What number comes next in the series? 99, 86, 73, 60, 47, ?

Dates and number comparisons
"Which is the earliest date?" or "Which value is the smallest?" For dates, compare the years first and cross out the losers, then months, then days. These are quick points if you are systematic and a trap if you scan by eye.
Sample question · Number comparison · written by TimedPrep
Which of these dates is the earliest? (Dates are written month/day/year.)

Graphs
You get five numbers and five small line graphs with no scale. Do not read values. Find where the highest and lowest numbers sit in the list and discard every graph that has its peak or its low point somewhere else.
Sample question · Graphs and tables · written by TimedPrep
A machine produced 30, 10, 25, 20 and 15 parts in five hours in a row. Which graph shows this output? (The graphs have no numbers: match the shape.)
Logic statements
Two statements you must accept as true, then a third: is it true, false, or uncertain? Sketch it: names on a line for "taller than" chains, circles for "all" and "some". "Uncertain" is the right answer more often than people expect: if you can draw the situation two ways, it is uncertain.
Sample question · Logic statements · written by TimedPrep
Assume the first two statements are true. ("Some" means at least one, possibly all.) All contract workers are people paid weekly. No badge holders for Building C are people paid weekly. Some badge holders for Building C are contract workers. The third statement is:
- True
- False
- Uncertain
Word pairs
Two words: similar meanings, opposite meanings, or neither? The trap is a pair that looks or sounds alike but is unrelated. Decide in a fixed order: opposites? same? If neither jumps out in three seconds, it is probably "neither".
Sample question · Word pairs · written by TimedPrep
The words FEASIBLE and ACHIEVABLE have:
- Similar meanings
- Opposite meanings
- Neither similar nor opposite meanings
Analogies and opposites
For analogies, turn the first pair into a short sentence ("an author creates a novel") and drop the third word into the same sentence. For opposites, think of your own opposite before you read the choices; one of the choices will usually mean the same as the word, and that is the trap.

Scrambled sentences and sayings
Rearrange the words into a sentence and say which word comes last, or pick the statement closest in meaning to a proverb. For scrambles, start from the capitalized word and find the verb; you only need the ending.

Scoring: what the employer sees and what you see
Wonderlic's FAQ is direct about this. There is no pass or fail, and for Wonderlic Select there is no universal "good" or "average" score, because the test does not produce a single cognitive number. The three sections are combined and judged against the demands of the specific job you applied for. The employer sees the result immediately.
You do not get a number. In Wonderlic's words, numerical cognitive scores are not provided to candidates. Some candidates are shown a link to a Candidate Feedback Report when the assessment ends; if you did not get a link, there is no report for you. More in what happens after the test.
What about the famous 50-point scale? On the older versions the score was simply the number correct, and the test was built so that the average adult scored about 20. Prep vendors quote an average of 20 to 22; one academic norm sample averaged 23.3. Tables of "scores by occupation" that circulate online come from old Wonderlic manuals. They are historical averages, not requirements, and Wonderlic does not publish current cut-offs. We show them, labeled that way, in what is a good score for which job.
How to prepare in 2 to 3 days
Wonderlic says no preparation is required, and it is right that you cannot cram knowledge for this test. What changes with practice is speed and familiarity: you stop spending 15 seconds working out what a question is asking.
- Day 1 (30 minutes). Take one full timed test cold. Look at the breakdown: which types cost you the most time, and which you got wrong.
- Day 2 (30 to 40 minutes). Drill your two slowest types until the method is automatic. Then take a second full test and hold the pace: about question 17 at minute 4 and question 33 at minute 8 if you are aiming to see most of the test; fewer is fine if your accuracy is high.
- Test day (15 minutes). A short warm-up, not a full test. Then follow the test-day checklist.
Pacing has its own page: 50 questions in 12 minutes.
With TimedPrep the first full Wonderlic-format test is free, with no sign-up. The paid plan ($29, one-time) adds five more 50-question tests and two 30-question quick tests; $49 adds the drill trainer. Access lasts 12 months, with a 14-day money-back guarantee if you have barely used it.
The other two sections
After the timed part come 58 motivation items (you choose which of three work activities you would like most) and 150 personality statements (agree, neither, disagree). Wonderlic says the personality section is untimed, typically takes about 15 minutes, and you can go back and change answers. There are no right answers in either section, and Wonderlic asks you to respond candidly. Details and honest advice: the personality and motivation sections.
Common questions
How many questions are on the Wonderlic test and how long is it?
The timed cognitive section is 50 questions in exactly 12 minutes. The full Wonderlic Select assessment adds 58 motivation items and 150 personality statements, both untimed, for about 35 minutes in total.
Can you use a calculator?
No. The instructions say the questions must be answered without a calculator, dictionary or other resources. Wonderlic adds that only a few questions involve calculations.
What is a good Wonderlic score?
For Wonderlic Select, the publisher says there is no universal good or average score: the sections are combined and judged against the job. On the older 50-point version the average was about 20 to 22 correct.
Should you guess?
Follow the publisher: guessing is not likely to improve your score, but if you think you know the answer and are not sure, mark your best choice and move on. Do not skip around.
Do you get your score?
Not as a number. Some candidates receive a link to a Candidate Feedback Report at the end; the employer is generally not required to share results.
Do you have to pay to take the Wonderlic?
No. Wonderlic does not charge candidates, and it reminds them that sites selling practice material are not affiliated with it. That includes us: TimedPrep is independent practice, written by us, and the first full test is free.
