The employer said "cognitive ability test" and nothing else. Now what?

Most pre-employment cognitive tests are the same test in different clothes: about 50 short questions, 12 to 15 minutes, no calculator. If you do not know which one you are getting, prepare for what they share.

Updated October 13, 2026 · by TimedPrep

  • Typical format: 40 to 50 multiple-choice questions in 12 to 20 minutes
  • Seconds per question: 14 to 18 on the most common tests
  • Content: words, numbers, logic, shapes; no job knowledge
  • Calculator: not allowed on the Wonderlic, CCAT or PI
  • Finishing: most people do not, and the tests are built that way
  • Result: goes to the employer; you usually do not see a score

What "cognitive ability test" usually means

Recruiters use several names for the same thing: cognitive ability test, cognitive assessment, aptitude test, general ability test, problem-solving assessment. All of them mean a short, timed, multiple-choice test of reasoning. Publishers describe what they measure in nearly the same words: Criteria says its CCAT measures the ability to "solve problems, digest and apply information, learn new skills, and think critically" (Information Brief); The Predictive Index says its test measures the "capacity to learn, adapt, and grasp new concepts" (product page); Wonderlic says its test is about "logic and reasoning rather than knowledge" (candidate FAQ).

So none of them tests accounting, coding or sales skills. They test how quickly you can work out something you have not seen before, and the time limit is part of the measurement.

The three you are most likely to get

TestQuestionsMinutesChoicesHow the invitation gives it away
Wonderlic50 (short form 30)12 (short form 8)5"Wonderlic Select" or "WonScore"; about 35 minutes in total with personality questions
CCAT50155"Criteria", an Event ID, ondemandassessment.com
PI Cognitive Assessment50124"Predictive Index" or "PI"; often a 6-minute behavioral questionnaire with it

The invitation almost always contains enough to identify the test: the sender, the link, the stated time limit. Our page which test did I get? walks through it and gives you a two-line message to send the recruiter if you still cannot tell. Asking is normal and does not count against you.

Rules that differ, and why you should find out

The content of these tests overlaps heavily. The rules do not:

If you cannot find out which test it is, use the safe common rule: work in order, answer every question you have read, give no question more than about 30 seconds, and do not fill in random answers for questions you never reached unless the instructions on the screen say wrong answers are free. The instructions page of every test states its own rules. Read it slowly; it is not timed on any of the three tests above.

Word problems

The largest group on most tests: percentages, prices, rates, averages. The numbers are chosen so that mental arithmetic works. Estimate first, then check which answer choice is near your estimate.

A caterer orders 6 pounds of rice for 12 guests. At the same rate, how many pounds of rice are needed for 14 guests?

  1. 6.5
  2. 7
  3. 7.5
  4. 8
  5. 28

Number series

Find the rule, give the next number. Differences between neighbors solve most of them; if the numbers bounce up and down, read every other number.

Sample question · Number series · written by TimedPrep

What number comes next in the series? 99, 86, 73, 60, 47, ?

  1. 34
  2. 35
  3. 36
  4. 38
  5. 44

Analogies and opposites

Word relationships. Turn the first pair into a sentence and reuse it. For opposites, name your own opposite before reading the choices.

ACTOR is to STAGE as ATHLETE is to ___

  1. field
  2. coach
  3. ball
  4. medal
  5. team

Logic

Short statements you must take as true, then a conclusion or a "who was second?" question. Draw it: a line for orderings, circles for "all" and "some", four blanks for a seating or finishing order.

Sample question · Logic statements · written by TimedPrep

Four technicians finished a certification course in order of their scores, highest first. Oscar did not rank third. Dalia ranked immediately before Sonia. Oscar ranked immediately before Pia. Who ranked third?

  1. Dalia
  2. Oscar
  3. Pia
  4. Sonia

Figure patterns

Series, grids and odd-one-out questions made of shapes. Follow one feature at a time: position, rotation, shading, count.

Sample question · Figure grids · written by TimedPrep

Which figure completes the grid?

    Rotation and folding

Less common, but they appear on some general aptitude tests: which figure is the original turned, not flipped; what a folded, punched sheet looks like when opened. For rotation, track one distinctive corner. For folding, count the layers first: one fold doubles the holes.

Sample question · Rotated shapes · written by TimedPrep

Which option shows the figure after it has been turned (rotated), without being flipped?

Sample question · Paper folding · written by TimedPrep

A square sheet of paper is folded as the arrows show, then a hole is punched through all layers. Which option shows the sheet unfolded?

        Attention to detail

Pairs of names, codes or numbers: how many are identical? Compare in chunks of three or four characters.

        How these tests are scored

There is rarely a pass mark. The publisher turns your answers into a score and the employer compares it with what it wants for the role:

In all three cases the result goes to the employer, and you usually do not see it. More in what happens after the test and what counts as a good score.

How to prepare for a test you cannot name

        1. Today (20 minutes). Take our general cognitive ability practice test: 50 questions in 15 minutes, covering every type above. Your result shows your score, your accuracy by type and your time per question (no percentile: it is our own test, so there is no publisher norm to compare with).
        2. Today (5 minutes). Re-read the invitation with the identification page open. If it is still unclear, send the recruiter the two-line question.
        3. Tomorrow (30 to 40 minutes). Drill your two slowest types. If you now know the test, take one full practice test in that exact format; the clock and the number of answer choices feel different.
        4. Test day. Ten minutes of warm-up questions and the checklist.

Practice does not make you smarter in two days. It removes the seconds you lose working out what a question wants, and it teaches you to drop a question that is not moving. On tests where the average person answers fewer than half the questions correctly, those seconds are points.

The first general test on TimedPrep is free with no sign-up, and so is one full test in each named format. Paid access is $29 for one exam or $49 with the drill trainer, one-time, for 12 months, with money back within 14 days if you have barely used it.

        Common questions

What is a cognitive ability test for employment?

A short timed test of reasoning with words, numbers, logic and shapes: typically about 50 questions in 12 to 15 minutes. It measures how fast you solve new problems, not job knowledge.

How do you prepare when you do not know which test it is?

Practice the shared question types under a strict clock and learn to leave a question after about 20 to 30 seconds. Then try to identify the test from the invitation.

Can you fail a cognitive ability test?

Most have no fixed pass mark. The employer decides what score range it wants for the role, and the test is normally one input among several.

        Are calculators allowed?

Not on the Wonderlic, the CCAT or the PI Cognitive Assessment. Other tests differ, so read the instructions of yours.
