The Wonderlic with 30 questions in 8 minutes
The 30-question, 8-minute Wonderlic is the shorter version of the classic 50-question, 12-minute test, with the same kinds of questions. Wonderlic calls the school version the SLE "quicktest" (SLE-Q); the older hiring version is the WPT-Q. The pace is 16 seconds a question instead of 14.4, so it is shorter but hardly easier.

- Format: 30 questions, 8 minutes (16 seconds per question)
- Names: SLE-Q or "quicktest" for schools; WPT-Q for the older hiring version
- Questions: the same kinds as the 50-question test
- Aids: no calculator, no dictionary
- Pass mark: none published; schools and employers set their own
Who sends the 30-question version
- Schools, for remote applicants. Wonderlic's SLE page gives the Scholastic Level Exam's standard version as 50 questions in twelve minutes and the remote "quicktest" as 30 questions in eight. Pima Medical Institute, for example, tells applicants its online programs use 30 questions in 8 minutes and its campus programs 50 in 12.
- Employers, as a first screen. Wonderlic's description of its older Personnel Test gives the WPT-Q 8 minutes; prep companies report 30 questions, and that some employers send it at home before a supervised 50-question test.
Most employer invitations today are for Wonderlic Select, whose timed part is 50 questions in 12 minutes (what WonScore and Wonderlic Select are). Check your invitation: it states the number of questions and the time. If it does not, see which test did I get.
30 in 8 versus 50 in 12
| 30 questions | 50 questions | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 8 minutes | 12 minutes |
| Seconds per question | 16 | 14.4 |
| Kinds of questions | Same | Same |
| Calculator | No | No |
| Published norms | None we have found | Historical: average about 20 to 22 |
The extra 1.6 seconds a question is real but small. What changes more is the weight of each question: one question you sit on for 40 seconds costs you a larger share of an 8-minute test than of a 12-minute one.

Your score is the number of correct answers out of 30. We know of no published norms for this version, so there is no honest percentile chart for it, and a score out of 30 should not simply be multiplied up to compare with the 50-point averages: the time per question is different.
What counts is the minimum set by whoever sent the test. Schools set one per program and will tell you if you ask the admissions office; employers judge the result against the job. More on the 50-point scale in what a Wonderlic score means.
How to pace 8 minutes
- Checkpoints: about question 8 at minute 2, question 15 at minute 4, question 23 at minute 6.
- A ceiling per question: if a question is still unclear after about 30 seconds, mark your best choice and move on. Wonderlic's own instructions say not to skip around, so treat every answer as final.
- No calculator: round, estimate and compare with the choices. Wonderlic says only a small number of questions involve calculations.
The same method for the 50-question test, and the guessing rules of each hiring test, are in 50 questions in 12 minutes.
How to practice for it
Practice on the longer test is good preparation for the shorter one: same kinds of questions, a slightly tighter clock and more of them, so the 8-minute version will feel roomier on the day. Our free Wonderlic-format test is the 50-question, 12-minute version, with no sign-up. The paid plans add two 30-question, 8-minute tests in this exact format, so you can rehearse the real clock too. Our questions are written by us; we are not affiliated with Wonderlic.
